Orange Crush Run The Gauntlet! PDF Print E-mail

Orange Crush 2016 B Shield 1

All hail Orange Crush!  To virtually everyone's surprise, they have claimed the B Division Shield.  The team was forced to run the gauntlet by despatching in consecutive weeks Dragons Fire, Manchester United and Thee Olde Boys.  The Soda Pops' Shield was earned despite the team being unable to beat any of their opposition in regulation!  Each game went to penalties but the perfect shooting by Vladimir "The Emperor" Napoleon, Trevor "Trigger Happy" Howes, and Lakis "The Wise" Karyofyllis proved decisive.  Remarkably, the goals by our GGSL President Lakis - the man impervious to pressure - were decisive in each victory!

Congratulations to the players of the new Masters division for a very successful inaugural winter season that ended Feb 3, 2016!  Particular thanks go to GGSL President Lakis Karyofyllis who believed from the start that the concept of mid-week, over 50 soccer, would be successful.  We also acknowledge the 4 expansion team managers Ben Cornick (Celtic), Alan Pfahl (Dortmund), Rob Macfarlane (Highlanders) and Khima Reyal/Gerry Lecuyer (Model T's) who assembled and guided their teams in this 1st campaign.  A big shout-out to our Master referee Dante Dipenta for his outstanding work.  Dante's guidance was critical in educating players to compete safely and in the spirit of the league.  While the Model T's picked up the winter league's first cup, all current (and future) players of the Master's division are the true winners!

Near Sweep of Party Door Prizes by A Division! PDF Print E-mail
Ian Lawrence with Winter Party Door PrizeA great night was had by all Friday, Jan 29th as the GGSL celebrated the end of the Fall/Winter season.  Players flocked to an over-flowing Connors Pub to exchange some laughs and fill up on the complementary wings & nachos (and the non-complementary beers & spirits!)
Door prizes were lavished on the attendees, first in the form of 50 NFL themed t-shirts, gifts from Connors Pub.  There were also 5 ticket draws for various prize packs.  Like they might be expected to do on the pitch, the "A" division dominated their "B" & Masters division counterparts.  Three GGSL t-shirt/mug/hat packages were awarded to lucky winners Rich Green of the Eagles, Bayern's Pius Gratwohl, and Man U's Peter Tuck (Man U was the only team preventing an "A" sweep of the prizes).
League sponsor Javed Chowdhury, of Quality Meat & Food Limited donated a very generous prize of 11 pounds of chicken wings which was picked up by Jorge Corea of Boca Seniors.
The final door prize that everyone was waiting for was an amazing wine fridge again donated by Connors Pub.  The winning ticket matched that of Gunner Ian Lawrence who walked away with the prize (actually he tried to walk away with it but got too tired).
Later in the evening the identity of each team's opponents for the fast approaching GGSL shield was determined by way of a public draw.  The road to the shield starts Feb 5th (A & B divisions) and Feb 10th for the Masters division!
The GGSL extends our thanks to Connors Pub for the generous prizes donated to the league, and to all the players who participated in our annual winter party!
